Reading

At St Edward’s Academy we place high importance on reading and having the support from home makes your child’s learning journey even more significant. Please encourage children to read as often as possible at home using the online GoRead app.
Children begin reading phonic books matched to their needs until they have passed the Phonic Screen which takes place in the Summer Term of Year 1. The children then move on to colour band books to develop their comprehension, fluency, stamina and enjoyment. Many of these books are from the Oxford scheme featuring Biff, Chip and Kipper.
Handwriting
In school the style of handwriting taught is ‘continuous cursive’. We start to teach letter formation in Nursery and Reception and develop continuous cursive in Years 1 and 2 with the aim for most children to be writing in a fully cursive style as they enter Year 3.
